Welcome to Derwent Class
The children in our class work together to achieve more and our class motto is:
‘We are respectful and kind’
Staff in our class are:
Mr Preston – Class Teacher
Mrs Fletcher & Mrs Eckley – Year 4 Maths
Mrs Blower – Special Needs and Classroom Assistant
Learning in our class is often through challenges. We work closely with Foss Class and children work in both classes at times for phonics, spellings, punctuation and grammar sessions, as well as maths, guided reading and some topic activities.
During the week we have the following activities:
P.E. – On a Wednesday morning children are welcome to come to school wearing PE kits. Mr Jeff, our specialist P.E. teacher takes the class for a session. Please bring P.E. kits in on a Monday so that children can take part in other P.E. activities during the week, including after school activities for Year 4 and 5 children on a Thursday.
Restorative Circle Time – Mrs Eckley takes the class for a restorative circle session on a Wednesday morning. The circle is a time for children to discuss the theme of the week, celebrate successes and find solutions to any problems.
Spanish, Music, Computing and R.E – Children take part in activities on a Thursday afternoon for the above subjects. We are really lucky to have specialist Spanish and Music teachers who come in to school to teach those subjects.
Enrichment is on a Thursday afternoon from 3:15-4:15pm for all Year 4 children in Derwent Class which will allow them to participate in extra-curricular activities with specialist teachers.
During other afternoons we have creative curriculum activities, linking all subjects around our theme for the term.
Reading – Children take part in guided reading sessions every day except on a Thursday. We listen to children read in groups and these sessions give the children time to listen to others read, question and be questioned about what they have read and how the author has written in a certain way. Because we make notes on these sessions in guided reading folders, we do not write them up in the children’s planners.
Individual reading books can be changed by your child daily. If your child keeps forgetting to change their book, please let us know. Reading is part of your child’s homework and they have a challenge to read at least five times a week. Please would you listen to your child read so that you can ask him/her questions and help them improve their understanding and fluency. We would be grateful if you could then write a note in their planner to say they have read to you.
Homework – Homework projects will be set every few weeks linked to our topic. Children will also be set spellings for each week and daily reading.
