Welcome to Aire Class
Teachers in our class are:
Miss Oglesby and Mrs Purdy
Every morning we come into class, complete our morning task, which usually involves practising our handwriting, and then have ‘check in’. ‘Check in’ is a time where we come together and check how we are all feeling at the start of the day.
We then have phonics followed by English and Mathematics (except on Thursdays). When we are not learning in a group with the teacher, we learn through independent challenges.
After lunch we have guided reading followed by topic time. We ask questions about our topic and get to say what we would like to learn about. Before the end of the day we have our special DEAR (Drop Everything and Read) time. We share stories with our teacher, read in groups or read independently. We love to end the day with show and tell or a story.
On Thursdays we have our ‘carousel morning’ where we spend time with different teachers. Mr Jeff teaches us P.E., Mr Acaster teaches us Music, Mrs Sadullah teaches us Spanish and we have restorative circles with Mrs Purdy. Your child will need to come into school dressed in their P.E. kit on this day and bring their school uniform in their bag to change back into before lunch time.
When your child has finished reading their book with you at home they can then change it for a new one at school. Asking your child questions about their book as you go along will help to develop their understanding and question answering skills. Please write a note in their planner to say they have read with you. It is also great for children to read the same book more than once to increase their familiarity with words and improve their fluency. Your child can also read anything at home, from books to magazines, the back of a cereal packet to a leaflet sent through the post!
We are very grateful for any volunteer readers who would like to spend time reading with children from our class on an afternoon. If this sounds like something you would like to do, please speak to Miss Oglesby.
During guided reading your child will have the opportunity to change their books when reading with Miss Oglesby. This will be once a week but if your child would like to change their books more frequently than this they can place them in the box marked ‘planners’, situated on the shelves just as you enter the classroom, along with their planner and will be given an opportunity to change their books during the afternoon of that day.
Our homework policy is on the website. Homework will be given on a Friday and a spelling check will take place the following Friday after which spelling certificates will be awarded. These can take pride of place on your fridge or wall! Homework includes spellings, number gym and reading daily. Children are expected to practice writing spellings in sentences. We will also be introducing homework projects which will be set every few weeks.
